November 2014 ALAP Meeting Recap
The ALAP crew came together despite a snowy night for our final potluck meeting of 2014. Our guest presenter this month was John Meeske, a long-time entrepreneur and businessman with significant regional hospitality industry experience (Dill’s/Shanty Creek). John presented his latest project, Experiences Corp, and answered initial questions from the group. Experiences Corp is a boutique advisory/asset management business focused on under-performing hospitality businesses. John and his team have developed an array of franchise-like operating protocols that they apply to hard-to-franchise resorts, unique restaurants, ski resorts, etc in order to give asset owners “all the advantages of franchising without a franchise.” The goal of these protocols, when successfully deployed, is to lower the risk and increase the success rate of complex hospitality businesses to the 85% rate enjoyed by national franchises. During our meeting, we were only able to scratch the surface of John’s business model which includes fee generation from license sales, asset management fees, funding fees, and business sale fees. After John, we heard updates from the group and discussed group business. Barb gave us a quick summary of her trip to the national Slow Money gathering in Louisville and brought some new local investing/economy books she picked up recently.
